COVID-19 Response: Changes Effective Immediately
Humane Society of Sheboygan County’s Statement Regarding COVID-19: Changes Effective Immediately
The health and safety of our animals, staff, volunteers and our entire community is of the utmost importance. We are aware of concerns related to COVID-19 and are following recommendations made by the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Humane Society of the United States and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association.
As much as we love our visitors, effective today, March 16, 2020, HSSC will be closed to the general public and services will only be available by appointment. All appointments can be made by calling us at 920-458-2012. Please read below for further information regarding services.
ADOPTIONS: Interested adopters must have an application processed and approved to meet with animals, by appointment. We ask that only those who are serious about adoption to schedule an appointment. Please call ahead to discuss adoptable pets with a staff member.
INTAKE: HSSC will continue to take in stray animals during this time. We ask that people interested in surrendering their own animal to please hold off if non-emergent so our small facility can respond to emergency situations that arise in times of crisis like these. If it’s not at all possible for you to keep your animal, please call us to schedule an appointment.
NAIL TRIMS & MICROCHIPS: HSSC will continue to offer these services, by appointment only. Learn more here.
CAAP Food Share: If you are a CAAP participant and your family is experiencing financial hardship and needs pet food, please call the shelter to schedule a time to pick up pet food. Please note that quantity is limited, especially during a time like this.
EVENTS: Moving forward, all events scheduled for the foreseeable future are canceled/postponed. This includes our PetSmart mobile adoption event on March 28th as well as our upcoming TNR day. We will update our website and Facebook page as things evolve.
Please note that as of today, we have not had any employees test positive for the virus, nor are we aware of any visitors to the shelter that have tested positive. Common sense and good hygiene remain the best courses of action. At HSSC we have enhanced our already-strong cleaning and disinfecting protocols throughout our shelter. HSSC staff and volunteers who are at a higher risk have been instructed to remain at home. Shelter leadership is monitoring the situation on an emergent basis and will act immediately on any changes and adaptations as needed.
Animal welfare is already extremely difficult work and we are anticipating the current state to provide even further challenges. HSSC expects to see an increase in animals needing safe keep housing, families with pets requiring supplies, and an increased need for adoptions and foster care. Right now, more than ever, we urgently need adopters. If you are unable to adopt a pet, please consider making a monetary donation here. Supply donations can be sent via Amazon to 3107 N 20th St, Sheboygan, WI 53083. Please refer to our wish list for needed items here.
We are encouraging all pet-owners to have a plan in place for their pets at home. Please make sure pets are wearing proper identification, have crates, extra food, supplies and medication on hand, and identify a trusted family member, friend, neighbor or pet sitter who can care for your pet if you become ill or are hospitalized.
Thank you for your support during this challenging time. As a community, we will get through this together. Please continue to follow our Facebook page for updates and cute animals to brighten up your news feed.
